My mom was the instructor and she encouraged me to come try it. I was so hesitant at first. You know those first thoughts of yoga running through your head; what is this? It’s too odd. I won’t be good enough. The stereotype of yoga – weird, spiritual, gentle. At least that was my perception of it. So that being said, I went ahead and tried it. I was awful, didn’t understand anything. But something made me want to go back and do it again. In late 2011 my mom, Fay Chapple, opened a Wellness Centre and Yoga Studio called The Clarity Centre. Being a website designer, I decided to do all the marketing for Clarity; the love for being creative is always with me. I eventually took some classes and there was something about this studio my mom created that I absolutely fell in love with. The environment, the teachers, the community. My whole perception of yoga was wrong. This was something cool, fresh, life changing. When I was in my last year of high school, 2 months before graduating, I got a call from my mom saying my dad had a brain aneurysm. At that time, I had no idea what it was.

As my dad continued to be in the hospital for days after days and weeks after weeks, I knew something wasn’t right. I eventually had learned what it was, and that unfortunately it has left him disabled. It’s hard being 17 years old (and having a 15 and 2 year old brother at the time), and realizing your whole life has changed within seconds.

It’s been almost 4 years since my dad got sick. He is still fully disabled, my mind can’t seem to figure it out. That being said, he is still here with us.

So where am I now? Believe it or not, I am almost finished my journey to becoming a certified yoga instructor. I don’t believe yoga changed my life, I believe it brought me back to life. When tragedy hits the family, there’s not a lot in you to be motivated to do anything. Yoga has made me stronger both physically and mentally. It has challenged me through the mind and body. Healed me and made me smile. Yoga is not about self improvement, it is about self acceptance, which is a beautiful thing.

I hope to inspire people through my story and lead them on this fabulous journey to healing. I specifically want to reach out to those who are very hesitant on starting yoga, and prove to them that is is unlike anything they have tried before. No matter your age, young, old or just young at heart, Yoga can help you feel better and more alive.

Hatha Yoga is such a beautiful and sacred practice. It is one of the oldest types of yoga, and what many of us do not know, is that there is an intuitive approach to the Hatha Yoga asanas (poses), and a Secret Language behind them!

With our busy schedules and minds, we often lose sight of our intentions to practice yoga. We become caught up in our deadlines and our to-do lists, when we should be going deeper into observing our mind, body, soul, and relationships – on and off the mat!

Through the hatha asanas, we can delve into our inner life, and unlock the meanings of the poses to expand our awareness and knowledge of our sacred selves, and our sacred world.

The goal of yoga, and the goal of the process of yoga is all about awareness. Awareness in our mind, body, soul, and relationships. In Garudasana (Eagle Pose), we begin to open up to greater knowledge. We start to see and understand more. When we bring the attention into the present, we begin to find the awareness we need to understand it for ourselves.

In ancient Hindu Mythology, Garuda is the eagle; the king of the birds. He is seen as a huge bird, whose wings can cover the rays of the sun! He flies as high as the clouds and looks down at the world beneath him. The asana that represents Garuda, is Garudasana. It also represents awareness, and the third eye chakra. For Garuda can observe all things, and when we practice garudasana, we block out what we see in front of us so that we can turn our attention inwards and observe our mind, body, soul, and relationships without any distractions.

Garudasana is helpful when trying to understand an unclear situation. Move into eagle pose to bring the eagle’s clear sight and abstract point of view into focus. What can you see? Can you make a change to the situation?

The next time you’re in one of our Hatha Yoga classes at The Clarity Centre, and the instructor has your wrapped up, and bound in garudasana, take a deep breath and bring your awareness to mind, body, soul, and relationships in the present moment. Envision yourself as Garuda, the king of birds, and soar through your sacred self, and our sacred world.

Our lives and time are moving at an increasingly fast pace. We have more stimuli around us than ever before. Access to cell phones, TV, mobile devices, instant messaging, social media, work, home, family and friends is always present. We begin to notice that our time that is so valuable to us is “ used up” to “keep up”. This fast pace of life, without you even noticing develops type A personalities.

We lose sight of how to be and stay focused on the task or experience on hand. How do we gain control of our lives and busy schedules? How can we become “clear” and focused to be fully present and enjoy life’s experiences to its fullest. Not just socially, but also at work?

The simple answer is incorporating the lessons that yoga teaches into our lives. Something as simple as learning how to close your eyes, breathe generously and focus only on the sound of your breath is the doorway to being present.

Whether it’s a physical practice of moving the through challenging poses, or sitting in stillness and observing the natural sensations of what is around us and what is within us, your yoga practice is exactly that. It is a place to “practice” and work towards catching yourself when you become distracted. Yoga teaches us tools to anchor stillness and to be a quiet observer. It teaches us to come back to the present moment. Yes there will be moments when our minds wander, we become distracted by thoughts that linger like cobwebs cluttering the mind, thoughts of the past day, and thoughts of the future. There will be moments when we become distracted by the challenge within the physical practice as we push ourselves to a physical limit. Yet we have the gentle reminder from our teacher guide to be aware and catch ourselves when our mind has either checked out or is to full to be focused on what is right in front of us.

Where to start? For” Focus” and “Clarity.” Join me and the many other teachers at Canada’s premiere yoga centre. http”//theclaritycentre.ca Add a yoga class into your life, whether it is a meditation, or gentle restorative to calm your mind. Or a hatha or Ashtanga class were the emphasis is more on physical alignment. Yoga will give you the tools to focus on being present while you are on your mat. In turn you can take away those lessons when you’re off your mat and in your daily life.

Witness if you can lengthen the inhale to match the length of the exhale. Using your breath to enliven your natural range of motion. As you inhale you lift and open. As you exhale, soften and create space.Moving into a pose with breath awareness allows you to go in slowly, sensitive to your body’s feedback signals from movement to movement. When you move through asana or a flow to fast, without a clear focus on breath, you can become over enthusiastic and you tend to bypass the appropriate limitation or “edge”. There is a tendency to thrash through the asana aggressively. With Breath as your guide, you can move through a deep realm of sensitivity.

You learn to avoid extremes of over and under use. Without Breath awareness, we are more likely to give up on the first hint of intense situations… You then miss the gift of discovering control and body awareness, Allow yourself to back off or come out of a pose and to rest when you notice your breath has sped up or is forced. Let your breath be a gauge for your practice.

Flowing breath in a yoga practice can take you to a state of moving meditation. Breathing enhances the physical poses and calms and clears your mind. Breath is your life force, send your life force to every inch of you body and to the very centre of your core and you will find a deeper purpose to your practice.
